Ultrasonic welding is a process by which the high-frequency vibrations of an ultrasound are applied to a work piece that needs to be welded together. Pressure is added to the parts and they are held together until they accomplish what is referred to as solid state welding. Normally, a frequency between 20 and 40 kHz must be present for this to work. Such type of welding is used for plastics and for joining two different materials.
The use of ultrasonic vibration eliminates the need for bolts, nails, braze, or adhesives to hold the materials together. Through the use of vibrations on the thermoplastics, the plastic melts because it absorbs the energy of the vibration that is drawn across the joint to be welded. For metals, ultrasonic welding takes place when the material is passed through friction welding.
The vibrations produced by an ultrasonic welding machine are generated by a welding horn and they soften the thermoplastic material along the connecting line. The equipment used determines the strength of the weld, and this depends on how the equipment is designed, the type of materials that will be welded and their properties, and the design of the joint.
The time required for ultrasonic welding is very small, and for mass production, this type of welding works very effectively. This type of welding is used in the automotive industry for light bundles of things that need to be done and for the manufacture of electronic products, such as the casing of mobile phones.

- A controller that can control the movement of the press and how it delivers the ultrasound energy.
Ultrasonic welding can be found in many different fields outside the field of electronics and automotive industries. This process is also used in the electrical, computer, aerospace, packaging and medical industries
